How Botox and Fillers Work Together

Posted on Friday, June 22nd, 2018 by Douglas M. Stevens, MD
Combining Botox and dermal fillers

Patients sometimes ask whether Botox is better than a facial filler. The answer will largely depend on your cosmetic goals. Sometimes, it is advantageous to combine both Botox and fillers to achieve the desired anti-aging outcomes. In this post, facial plastic surgeon Dr. Douglas Stevens discusses how Botox and fillers can work together to improve your appearance.

Botox Minimizes Facial Wrinkles

Botox is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures because it offers great results for a minimally invasive procedure. Botox injections are particularly effective for reducing forehead lines, frown lines between the eyebrows, and forehead wrinkles.

Some younger patients are even using Botox now as a preventive measure. Botox requires no downtime and the injections can easily fit into a busy schedule.

Facial Fillers Soften Deep Creases

The effects of aging can lead to deep creases as a result of lost volume in certain areas. Facial fillers can be a great way to get back some of this lost volume.

Fillers such as Juvederm and Bellafill can soften creases by restoring the cheeks or lips to their youthful shape. Fillers can also be used in other areas, including to reduce hollowness below the lower eyelids.

Botox and Fillers Are a Winning Combination

So, which non-surgical procedure is better? Each can be used in different ways and on different parts of the face. Even better, you can have Botox and fillers administered together for an even more dramatic makeover!

Both injections can be performed quickly, but there are some notable differences:

  • Fillers offer immediately visible results, while Botox results can take a week to appear and up to two weeks to fully take effect.
  • Fillers can last anywhere from one year to up to five years.
  • The results of Botox don’t last as long as fillers, so you may need more frequent Botox injections — typically every three to six months.

Having both procedures performed together gives you the best of both worlds.  You’ll need to explain your desired results to your facial plastic surgeon, so set up an initial consultation to discuss your cosmetic goals.
