Improving the Appearance of a Small or Recessed Chin

Posted on Monday, July 23rd, 2018 by elite
Enhancing a small chin

A strong, sculpted chin is an attractive quality, particularly among men that desire a classically masculine facial appearance. The chin gives the lower face great definition and balances out the nose. Looking at a group of Hollywood’s leading men, you may notice that most of them have a well-defined chin that complements the rest of their facial features.

If you weren’t born with an A-List chin, facial plastic surgeon Douglas Stevens can help. He offers several ways to improve the appearance of a small or recessed chin so you can look and feel your absolute best.

Chin Implants

The first option to build up a weak or recessed chin is with a chin implant. Dr. Stevens can place a synthetic implant around the existing chin bone to improve its size, shape and definition, and bring the chin into better proportion with the other facial features. Chin implants come in a variety of shapes and sizes to suit a wide range of patients, and are made of biocompatible materials.

Placing a chin implant can usually be done on an outpatient basis with general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. Dr. Stevens places the implant through an incision either underneath the chin or inside the mouth. The implant is molded to fit the contours of the bone for natural-looking results.

Sliding Genioplasty

Another option to improve the appearance of a small or recessed chin, especially in cases of a chin deficiency, is through a surgical procedure to “lengthen” the chin bone. During the sliding genioplasty operation, the chin bone is cut and advanced or repositioned to add projection. Although the surgery is more invasive than the placement of an implant, the surgical incisions may be similar.

Facial Liposuction

Sometimes the chin appears to be recessed, when in actuality excess fat is obscuring the transition between the chin and neck and making it look as though the chin is “melting” into the neck. In these cases, removing the excess fat can help to differentiate the chin from the neck and improve jawline definition. Dr. Stevens can achieve this by performing liposuction under the chin and along the jawline to remove stubborn pockets of fat. This gives the entire lower face a more youthful and attractive contour.
