Skin Care During Winter Months in Naples

Posted on Thursday, December 5th, 2013 by Douglas M. Stevens, MD

One of the reasons so many of our patients move to Naples is because of how beautiful our winters are. In contrast to northern states like New York or Illinois, Florida winters are extremely mild and present minimal skin health issues. Moreover, here in Florida, over-exposure to sunlight is still concern in the heart of winter (if you want to call it that). Nevertheless, there are two key issues relating to skin health that we wish Floridians would be mindful of year-round:

Sun Protection

During the winter months, the humidity in Florida is down and the weather is great.  Don’t be fooled though: the Florida sun is still stronger by approximately 150% versus areas up north. It’s a matter of geography – Florida is relatively close to the tropics. So, even though it is technically winter, be careful and wear a hat, sun glasses and sunscreen with re application of the sun screen every 2-3 hours. Avoidance of the strong mid-day sun is always recommended.

Moisturizing the Skin

Our main goals for skin care during the winter months continue to be “turnover” of old skin cells, replacement with new cells (“out with the old; in with the new”), as well as sun protection. Moisturizing the skin is especially helpful in increasing the turnover rate of skin cells. This is because it helps to prevent thick layers of dead skin cells from developing over new skin cells in areas of the body.

High Skin Cell Turnover Rate = Healthier, Faster-healing Skin
